UNDERSTAND YOUR BMI SCORE

Your Body Mass Index is a numerical value calculated from your height and weight. Healthcare professionals worldwide use it as a simple way to determine whether your weight falls within a healthy range.

A BMI score alone doesn’t measure body fat, muscle mass, or athletic ability, but it remains one of the most effective first-step screening tools for identifying potential weight-related health risks.

For most adults, maintaining a healthy BMI is associated with a lower risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and several other chronic conditions. That’s why doctors, nutritionists, personal trainers, and health organizations continue to use BMI as part of routine health assessments.

If you’re an athlete or someone with above-average muscle mass, remember that BMI should be interpreted alongside other measurements such as body fat percentage or FFMI for a more complete picture of your fitness.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND BMI

Body Mass Index has been used in health research for more than a century because it’s quick, reliable, and easy to calculate. Although originally developed as a population measurement, BMI has become the global standard for screening healthy weight in adults.

Organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and healthcare providers across the world use BMI categories to estimate health risks associated with being underweight, overweight, or obese.

Numerous clinical studies have shown that people with BMI values outside the recommended range are more likely to experience weight-related conditions, including cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders, joint problems, and reduced overall health. While BMI cannot diagnose these conditions, it serves as an important early indicator that further assessment may be beneficial.

HOW YOUR BMI IS CALCULATED

Your BMI is calculated using only two measurements: your body weight and your height.

Metric Formula

BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ Height² (m²)

Example:

Weight = 75 kg

Height = 1.75 m

BMI = 75 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75)

BMI = 24.5

Imperial Formula

BMI = (Weight (lb) ÷ Height² (in²)) × 703

This formula is commonly used in countries that measure weight in pounds and height in inches. Both formulas produce exactly the same BMI score.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

What is a healthy BMI for adults?

A healthy BMI for most adults falls between 18.5 and 24.9. This range is generally associated with the lowest risk of weight-related health conditions. However, BMI should always be considered alongside factors such as age, muscle mass, lifestyle, and overall health.

The HYROXS BMI Calculator provides an accurate BMI score based on your height and weight. While the calculation itself is precise, BMI is a screening tool and does not measure body fat percentage, muscle mass, or body composition.

Yes. Athletes and people with higher muscle mass may have a BMI that falls into the overweight category even though they have low body fat. Muscle weighs more than fat, so BMI may overestimate body fat in highly trained individuals.

No. BMI does not directly measure body fat. It only compares your weight to your height. For a better understanding of body composition, consider using measurements like body fat percentage or the FFMI Calculator.

The BMI formula is the same for both men and women. However, men and women naturally have different body fat percentages and muscle mass, so BMI should always be interpreted alongside other health indicators.
